Yesterday, we heard some exciting news from the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009.
Microsoft has announced that they are developing a new system for Xbox 360 that you actually will use your body instead of controller. The system is called Project Natal and it is said that it is already ready to use. Also it is said that we will be able to use the system with previous versions of Xbox 360 which is very good news. In this video you can see some of the exciting features of the system.
As Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation haven’t yet announced their projects which uses the motion control technology, Microsoft currenty seems one step further because Project Natal is ready to implement to Xbox 360. Although Wii is already using motion control (even if it is not controller-free) and Sony is developing Playstation Motion Controller, Microsoft has been the first one to announce controler-free system so, many will think that this revolutionary system was developed by Microsoft.
To talk about the technology, the motion control systems are being developed by many universities around the world. It is mostly based on one or more cameras and Image Processing technology to sense the movements of the individual. To detect 3D movements, I suppose Microsoft will be using more than one camera(most probably two) placed in different spots. There are also many flash games like those in Motion Games and here in this example.
So, Microsoft and their new system Project Natal have been the superstar of this year’s E3 2009. If they are really able to implement 70% of features they announced, we are going to have some exciting gaming experience for the coming years. And if Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation cannot compete againist Microsoft on this area, we will be saying goodbye to them in the near future.
Let’s see what will be coming next…
